Ablatives

rocketIn spacecraft design, the process of ablation is incorporated to both cool and protect the outer skin, mechanical parts and payloads that would otherwise be damaged by exposure to extremely high temperatures, such as the extraordinary levels of heat encountered during re-entry into the earth’s atmosphere. Ablative material is designed to slowly burn away in a controlled manner, so that heat can be carried away from the spacecraft by the gases generated by the ablative process; while the remaining solid material insulates the craft from superheated gases.

Materials manufactured in AvCarb’s Lowell facility were used on the heatshield of the Apollo manned spacecraft to protect it from the scorching heat generated during re-entry. To this day Avcarb has ongoing business in ablative applications and provides materials that are used in satellite launches every year.

The cutting edge materials deployed in these applications are constructed by combining proprietary materials and processes. This specially created material was subject to intense scrutiny and heat resistance testing procedures to ensure compliance with the specifications and performance in the field.

Heat spreaders

heatspreaders_smallOver time, electronics devices such as smartphones and tablets simultaneously improve performance, while getting smaller. Dissipating heat in next generation electronics is becoming increasingly difficult, but AvCarb has a solution. AvCarb HS products provide in-plane heat dissipation more than 4x quicker than traditional copper materials. Based on pyrolytic graphite, AvCarb HS offers a high performance solution to electronics designers.
